NASA Space Shuttle transported to shuttle pad
Let's add some more amazing facts about the space shuttle program, shall we?1) The three main SSME engines on the shuttle put out as much power as 23 Hoover Dams.
2) The fuel pumps which are the size of V8 engines, produce as much power as 40 diesel locomotives - each.
3) These fuel pumps, if the inlet were placed in a family sizes swimming pool, would empty the pool in under 6 seconds.
4) If the outlet of the pump was pointed upwards, it would drive a column of water 50 kilometres into the air.
Each crawler is powered by two 2,750 hp motors, weighs 6,000,000 pounds, and moves at a max speed of 1 mph (while loaded). It gets ~128 gallons to the mile. They use a laser level system to keep stable as it moves up a 5% grade incline to the launch site.
The Vehicle Assembly Building, where the boosters and fuel tank are attached to the Shuttle, is so large that it can rain inside the building. The door to the building is larger than the statue of liberty and takes 45 minutes to open. On the side of the building is an American flag. The stars on the flag are the 6ft wide, the blue area as big as a basketball court, and each stripe is as wide as a standard car lane.
